Octans Subsea is a high-performance subsea gyrocompass and motion sensor designed for underwater operations up to 3,000 meters in depth. Engineered with Exail’s proprietary fiber-optic gyroscope (FOG) strap-down technology, it delivers accurate real-time measurements of heading, roll, pitch, heave, rate of turn, acceleration, surge, and sway. The system is compact, portable, and built in a lightweight, corrosion-resistant titanium housing, facilitating rapid deployment and integration in offshore environments. It features Smart Heave™ capability and a web-based man-machine interface (MMI) over Ethernet, offering broad compatibility and streamlined operation. With the option to upgrade to a full inertial navigation system (INS), Octans Subsea provides scalable functionality for ROV navigation, multibeam echo sounder (MBES) stabilization, dredging, and marine construction. It achieves high-precision performance with 0.1° RMS heading accuracy (with GNSS/speed aiding) and 0.01° RMS roll/pitch accuracy (unaided). The system supports multiple serial and Ethernet connections, a wide range of industry-standard communication protocols, and maintains robust performance in extreme conditions with a mean time between failures of 100,000 hours for the system and 500,000 hours for the FOG and accelerometers.
